WHAT IS TEMAZCALLI?

Temazcalli is an ancient mesoamerican sweat-bath practice still active among traditional Mexican practitioners.

Physically it is a natural dome structure. It symbolizes the pregnant belly of the earth in which people go in to experience rebirth through the experience of sweat and the active elemental essences of fire, water, earth and air.

It consists of 4 to 7 doors that follow the understanding of the 4 to 7 cardinal directions in which the temazcal becomes a sacred space to rejuvenate our overall well-being.

Benefits Of Temazcalli

The temazcal offers many benefits that vary from physical, mental, and spiritual to emotional.

The heat helps the immune system to release muscular and glandular pain, while the sweat helps to cleanse and purify our blood.

The darkness of the space allows the third eye to open and experience the elemental essence of our spiritual nature while releasing mental and emotional stress and allowing the reprogramming of our molecular being for its new rebirth.

Your Facilitator

Xiuh Janiki Yollotl Patli is a Mexican-born wisdom keeper and practitioner of her mexica, toltec traditions; including temazcal, kinam and tezcatlipoca obsidian knowledge.

Xiuh’s temazcalli lineage comes from Xiuhcoatl Tepetochtli Temazcalli and Moon Dance Xochimeztli.

Xiuh has been facilitating temazcalli here in Aotearoa since 2015. Welcomed by te tangata whenua members of Ngati Porou, Ngati Toa and Nga Puhi. She has learnt tikanga Māori and rongoā Māori in order to weave and share mexicayotl with Māoritanga with respect, and to continue to seed love in this world.

Protocols

Temazcalli welcomes all people regardless of age, gender or culture.

However, its entrance is strictly prohibited to people intoxicated or under the use of any drug, psychoactive medicinal plants or fungi, or alcohol. This can cause DEATH.

Entrance is also prohibited to anyone with brain damage or anyone who is 3 months pregnant or more

Please communicate with the facilitator of any medical conditions before entering temazcal.

What To Bring

Preparation prior to temazcalli:

Drink plenty of water
Fast for at least 4 hours beforehand
Bring sarong, togs, long cotton dress, skirt or shorts (nudity by personal choice)
Bring a towel and water to drink
Bring a song, drums, rattles or flutes, if you have any
Come with an open heart, to receive

Recommendations post-temazcal:

Drink plenty of water
Eat fresh food and chew slowly
Take it easy and allow rest and integration to happen
Keep your head warm after temazcal to avoid headaches
