Earth Pigments Workshop
Julia Mack
This workshop is an introduction to Earth Pigments and paint making with Earth Pigments. Earth Pigments are obtained from rocks, ochres and minerals which contain coloured oxides and calcite. In this workshop Julia will demonstrate how to identify these materials and how to turn them into paint. Participants will be guided through the steps of Grinding (with a mortar and pestle), sieving and mulling pigments. The history of these pigments and their cultural significance both within Aotearoa and human history will be discussed. Working with Earth Pigments is a time-honoured and sacred practice. The significance of these materials will be discussed and incorporated into the making of paint and artworks which have a meaningful connection to the earth. All workshop materials will be provided and paint made can be taken home with you. Julia has plenty of tips on starting your own home practice with Earth Pigments in a way which is affordable, enriching and eco-friendly. Her pigments are sourced from the whenua of her home, Waiheke Island.
This workshop is for all ages.
