Edna is an artist, art therapist, counsellor, poet and travel journalist from Auckland with an MA in Art Therapy (overseas) and a BA (Hons) in Psychology from the University of Auckland. Her poems and short stories have been published widely in NZ and internationally, including The Poetry NZ YearBook 2021, Madness from Nepal, and Poetry for the Planet Australia. She has recorded a song in the first The Songwriters4ClimateAction album, and has been a guest poet in Titirangi Poets and Poetry LIve.

Today marks the anniversary of the passing of Lee

Today marks the anniversary of the passing of Lee "Scratch" Perry, a true maverick who shaped the sound of reggae and dub music as we know it. Born Rainford Hugh Perry in rural Jamaica, this musical wizard transformed from a humble dancehall hand to a groundbreaking producer and artist who pushed the boundaries of what was possible in a recording studio.

Perry wasn't just innovative; he was downright revolutionary. In the 1970s, while others were still figuring out how to use a mixing board, Perry was turning his studio, the Black Ark, into a literal sound laboratory. He'd use unconventional techniques like burying microphones under trees, blowing ganja smoke onto tape reels, and running tracks backward to create otherworldly sounds that would define the dub genre.

His collaborations read like a who's who of music royalty. From nurturing a young Bob Marley to working with punk icons like The Clash, and even influencing hip-hop pioneers the Beastie Boys, Perry's fingerprints are all over modern music.

But perhaps what made Perry truly unforgettable was his larger-than-life personality. Known for his eccentric fashion sense (think mirror-covered hats and technicolor outfits) and cryptic, often hilarious statements, Perry was as much a performance artist as he was a musician. He once famously claimed to be from Jupiter and that he could control the weather with his mind!

On this day in 2021, the world lost a true original. But Perry's legacy lives on in every dubplate spin, every bass-heavy remix, and every artist who dares to think outside the box. As he once said, "I am the Upsetter," and indeed, he upset the music world in the best way possible, leaving it forever changed and infinitely more interesting.
