Shady Lady
Caroline (Carrie) Ward
The Shady Lady (Whanganui) cut her teeth flinging 7” records on Jamaican-style sound systems and radio in the 2000s in Pōneke and Tāmaki Makaurau. She’s known for her genre-spanning sets, deep-dives into tune etymology and love of bass culture. Shady Lady is no stranger to the Aotearoa festival scene, having played sets at Splore, Taniwha’s Den, CubaDupa, Kiwiburn, Earthbeat and with the Lucky Star crew. She has also held residencies at Golden Dawn (AKL), Havana, Good Luck and Laundry bars in Pōneke, as well as regular shows on BaseFM, KFM and RadioActive. Nowadays you’ll find her in Whanganui running the infamous Neck Level underground warehouse raves on the Fat Owl Soundsystem.
