Why support Māori Sovereignty?
Pere Huriwai-Seger
It’s never been a more exciting time to join the revolution. This government’s relentless attacks on Māori have helped to motivate the oldest and most powerful movement in this country.
Constituting almost a fifth of the country’s population, the indigenous people of Aotearoa offer a real challenge to the young 185-year-old colony. The traditional Māori way of life is contradictory to the individualistic, capitalist state. Living communally and in harmony with our ecosystems doesn’t work for big business, so they’ve elected a government to try to crush the Māori movement.
We talk about decolonisation in 2025 and why it benefits everyone to support the struggle for Tino Rangatiratanga (Māori sovereignty).
Who are we? Kia ora, our names are Samah and Pere Huriwai-Seger, and we live on a papakāinga in Otaua, Northland. We operate a platform called Aotearoa Liberation League (ALL), where we create videos and other media about colonisation and capitalist exploitation. We also support flax roots movements and direct action where we can.
